About Grow Lights
LED or HID?
LED is the default now: more light per watt, less heat, no lamp changes, and dimmable fixtures that cover a plant from cutting to harvest. HID (HPS for flower, metal halide for growth, CMH for both) still costs less up front and is a proven way to flower a room; it needs more extraction and a lamp change every year.
Sizing
Match the light to the tent: about 150 to 200W of LED for a 60cm tent, 300W for 80 to 100cm, 480 to 720W for a 120cm tent, and multiple fixtures beyond that. For HID, a 600W HPS covers a 120cm tent. The LED Lighting and HID Lighting sections go into detail, our guides LED grow light wattage by tent size and why the best growers use LED and HPS together go further, and Propagation Lighting under Propagation covers seedlings and cuttings.
Running them
A timer or contactor switches the lights on a schedule; a lighting controller runs several LED fixtures together with sunrise and sunset dimming. All under Lighting Controllers and Accessories.
Growers' Guides
- LED Grow Light Wattage by Tent Size (and LED vs HPS)How many watts of LED a tent needs: 300-500 W/m² in flower, a table by tent size, the Maxibright, Gorilla and Adjusta-Watt fixtures that fit, and LED vs HPS.
- LED or HPS? Why the Best Growers Use BothTom's view from twenty years in the shop: run LED as the main light and add a dimmable HPS, metal halide or CMH for flowering weeks 3-7 for a better finish.
