About NFT Systems
How NFT works
Nutrient film technique runs a thin film of nutrient solution along a sloping tray, over a spreader mat that the roots grow into. The solution drains back to the tank below and a pump lifts it round again, all day. Roots get water, feed and air at once, so growth is very fast, and there is no medium to buy or dispose of: plants start in rockwool cubes and sit straight on the tray.
Which size?
The GT100 is the complete starter kit for a small tent. The GT numbers roughly follow tray size: GT205i, GT424, GT604 and GT901 take more or bigger plants. The Multiduct puts two channels side by side for rows. Correx sheets cover the tray to keep light off the solution and algae away.
Running it
Keep the solution at 18 to 22°C and aerated, change it weekly, and check EC and pH every day or two; with no medium to buffer, NFT rewards attention. Pumps, air stones and meters are in the neighbouring sections. NFT is compared with the other systems in our hydroponics guide.
