About Growing Media
Choosing a medium
Soil is the most forgiving: it buffers feeding mistakes and needs watering least often, and it suits organic feeds. Coco is inert and light, drains and re-wets easily and gives faster growth, but it must be fed at every watering with a coco nutrient and CalMag. Clay pebbles are for hydroponic systems, where water and feed are pumped through; they hold nothing themselves. Rockwool is the greenhouse standard for drip systems and propagation, sterile and consistent.
Improving a mix
Perlite opens a heavy mix; vermiculite holds water in a light one. Worm humus and Pre-Mix feed a soil for weeks. Most growers settle on soil or coco with 20 to 30 per cent perlite. The sections below cover each medium, and the shop will happily talk through which suits your setup.
