About HID Lighting
HPS, MH or CMH?
High pressure sodium (HPS) is the flowering workhorse: red-heavy, bright and cheap to run. Metal halide (MH) is bluer and keeps plants short and leafy in growth. Grolux dual-spectrum lamps cover both stages from one lamp. Ceramic metal halide (315W CMH) gives a fuller spectrum and more light per watt than either, and runs on its own ballast.
400V lamps, run on a compatible digital ballast, give the most light per watt of any HID lamp and hold their output for longer.
Reflectors
The Cool-tube Reflector puts the lamp inside a glass tube you connect to your ducting, so the heat leaves the tent before it warms the room. The Euro reflector is the standard open hood, and the Sunking Parabolic spreads light widely for bigger areas.
Lamp life
HID lamps fade long before they fail. Change lamps after about a year of use even if they still light: output drops well before the lamp goes. Many growers now add an HPS to an LED for the middle weeks of flowering: read why the best growers use LED and HPS together and LED grow light wattage by tent size.
