About Pumps & Aeration
Water pumps
A submersible pump in the tank moves the solution round an NFT, flood and drain or dripper system. Choose by flow and by head: the litres per hour it moves, and how high it has to lift the water. The New-Jet range covers small tents to rooms and the flow is adjustable; Maxi-Jet pumps are the compact, reliable choice for NFT trays; the TOP submersible pumps deliver the volume a flood and drain room needs. The Micro-Jet Oxy is a small pump that also draws in air to oxygenate the tank.
Air pumps and stones
Roots in solution need oxygen. An air pump on the shelf drives air through airline to an air stone in the tank, which breaks it into fine bubbles. Use one in every reservoir, not only in DWC: aerated solution stays fresher and roots stay healthier. Deep water culture and the other systems are explained in our hydroponics guide. The Hailea small air pump suits a tank in a tent; Tetra APS pumps run bigger tanks and several stones.
Keep them clean
Rinse pump filters and air stones between tank changes; a slowing pump is usually a blocked one.
